Tae Kwon Do - Double Outer Forearm Block

An Opening Block performed with the Inner-Forearms

An Opening Block (also called a Wedging Block in ITF-style taekwondo) is two simultaneous Outward Blocks.

  • If the block is performed with the outside of the forearms (the side the pinky is on) then it's called an Outer Forearm block.
  • If the block is performed with the inside of the forearms (the side the thumb is on) then it's called an Inner Forearm block.

The idea of these blocks is that they counter an attack on the chest.

The Outer Forearm Opening Block (also called simply Opening Block,  Wedging Block, Double Outward Block, Trunk Push Double Block, or momtong hecho makgi) is an opening block where the palms of the fist are palm-downward at the end of the block. This block appears, for example, in the form Taegeuk Chil Jang.

Chambering for the block is done by crossing both arms in front of your chest, palms facing your body. Both arms are moved outward so that the two fists -- palm down -- are at shoulder height and are a shoulder-width apart. Elbows and fists should stay inside the lines of the body.

To chamber, the arms are crossed in front of the chest with the palms facing away from the body. This block appears, for example, in the form Keumgang.
