In September 2016 the Kukkiwon and the Asian Taekwondo Union announced the development of ten new poomsae to be used in taekwondo competitions. The ten new forms are:

  • Himchari (힘차리) the "Powerful Challenge", for tournament competitors under age 18
  • Yamang (야망), for tournament competitors under age 18
  • Saebyeol (새별) the "New Star", for tournament competitors ages 18-30
  • Nareusya (나르샤) "Flying Upward", for tournament competitors ages 18-30; also known as Bee-Gak Sam Jang by World Taekwondo
  • Bigak (비각) the "Flying Kick", for tournament competitors ages 18-30; also known as Bee-Gak Ee Jang by World Taekwondo (note that this is distinct from the 2007 form often romanized as Bikkak)
  • Eoullim (어울림), for tournament competitors in their 30s and 40s
  • Saeara (새아라), for tournament competitors in their 30s and 40s
  • Hansol (한솔), for tournament competitors in their 50s and 60s
  • Narae (나래), for tournament competitors in their 50s and 60s
  • Onnuri (온누리), for tournament competitors in their 50s and 60s

The idea is that during the initial rounds of tournament poomsae competitions, athletes will compete using the conventional Kukkiwon curriculum poomsae; but then for the final rounds, athletes will compete using these more difficult poomsae. The added difficulty will make it easier for judges to distinguish between the performances of top-rank competitors.

The Korean word himchari means "strength"; the Kukkiwon interprets this to symbolize "A Powerful Challenge" -- i.e., strength achieved through the accomplishment of a difficult challenge. The lines of the poomsae are intended to symbolize a sprout stretching skyward in its growth.

Written Instructions[]

Lines of Himchari

The floor pattern of Himchari. The numbers correspond to the steps listed here. GA-RA-NA-DA are the four compass directions.

The following written description of Himchari is not definitive. It’s based on what can be seen in the video above. The time marks in the written description correspond to the time marks in the video.

Up the Stem[]

Start in the joonbee spot, facing GA (north), moving up the stem of the floor pattern:

Himchari 046

0:46 Joonbee

Himchari 048

0:48 Left Knifehand Inward Block with Right Knifehand Strike

Himchari 049

0:49 Ear Clap

  • 2. 0.49 Shuffle forward slightly to Left Front Horse-Riding Stance, chamber both arms out to the side, then bring both hands together, as if to clap the opponent’s ears.
Himchari 050

0:50 Knifehand Strikes to torso

  • 3. 0:50 Then drop back into left Tiger Stance (still with the left foot forward), chamber both arms out to the side again, and with both knifehands slice inward at torso height.
  • 4. 0:50 Right Front Kick, leave the right leg in the air, then
  • 5. 0:51 Right Back Kick, and drop the right foot behind you (as one normally does with a back kick).
  • 6. 0:52 As you place the right foot behind you, step down into Left Front Stance, with the hands chambered for a kick.
  • 7. 0:53 Jump once, Right-Left Double Front Kick.
  • 8. 0:53 Land in left Walking Stance.
  • 9. 0:54 Jump once, Right-Left Double Roundhouse Kick.
  • 10. 0:55 Land on the right leg, and step the left leg down in front of you, and start pivoting clockwise so that now you’re momentarily facing NA (south) in a Left Walking Stance.
  • 11. 0:55 Right Back Hook Kick in the GA direction, and (as one normally does with a back hook kick) continue rotating to return the foot back behind you, so that you’re in Left Walking Stance facing GA (north).
  • 12. 0:56 Step forward slightly with the left foot and Left Jump Back Hook Kick with Kihap, and (as one normally does with a back hook kick) continue rotating to return the foot back behind you, so that you’re in Left Back Stance (i.e., right foot forward) again facing GA (north).
  • 13. 0:58 Still in the Left Back Stance, chamber the arms back, pivot to Front Horse-Riding Stance and simultaneous Outward Knifehand Block with the right hand, and middle Punch with the left hand.
  • 14. 0:58 Still in Front Horse-Riding Stance, chamber the arms back again, then simultaneous Outward Knifehand Block again (this time at head-height), and Inward Elbow Strike with the left arm, also at head-height.
Himchari 058

0:58 This movement is seen several times throughout the form: a punch with the knifehand at shoulder level, perhaps as if the knifehand is holding the opponent's head?

  • 15. 0:59 Step the left foot forward into Right Back Stance, then mirror step 13: chamber the arms back and simultaneously Outward Knifehand Block with the left hand, middle Punch with the right hand.
Himchari 059

0:59 This movement is also seen several times throughout the form: an elbow strike with the knifehand at shoulder level

  • 40. 1:20 Land and pivot to a Right Back Stance (left leg forward) facing NA (south), Left Augmented Outward Block.

Moving in the GA-DA direction (northwest):

  • 41. 1:21 Jump to the right, right Roundhouse Kick in the NA-RA direction (southeast)

Second Butterfly Wing[]

At this point, you should be backon the center stem, but now facing NA-RA. You’re ready to start the second butterfly wing of the floor pattern.

Continuing to move in the GA-DA direction (northwest):

Himchari 128

1:28 The beginning of the "circling palms" movement - the right hand resting on the left hand

Himchari 132

1:32 The hands are brought up overhead

Himchari 134

1:34 Then they circle back downward

Himchari 141

1:41 The hands return to the start, then pull back into fists at the waist

  • 46. 1:25 After the Tornado Kick, continue rotating and step down so that you’re facing in the GA-DA direction (northwest) in an Open Stance.
  • 47. 1:27 Bring the right foot to the left foot to Closed Stance, still facing the GA-DA direction (northwest). Slowly overlap the right hand (palm-up) into the left hand (palm-up) at belt height, then raise the overlapped hands to forehead height, turning the hands over so that at forehead height they are facing outward. Continue bringing the open hands upward and then circle them outward, to return them into an overlapped position at belt height.
  • 48. 1:41 Still in a Closed Stance, bring both fists back to the waists.
  • 49. 1:42 Step the left foot forward into a Horse-Riding Stance facing GA-RA (northeast), looking over the left shoulder. Position the fist in a fighting position (left arm out, right fist protecting the chest). Kihap.

  • 68. 1:58 After the Left Side Kick, step the left foot down to the left of the body, into an Open Stance facing in the NA direction.

Facing in the RA direction (east), but not moving:

Himchari 159

1:59 The "hooking" roundhouse kick - the leg starts kicking as if performing a roundhouse kick, but then hooks downward, as if hooking the opponent's neck?

  • 69. 1:59 With the right leg, in the RA direction, perform two kicks: a low Roundhouse Kick with the ball of the foot, followed by a hooking roundhouse at head height. Land the right foot into an Open Stance with the body facing GA, your head still looking to the right in the RA direction.
  • 70. 2:00 Pivot into Right Front Stance facing in the RA direction. Left inward punch, while the right knifehand is held at shoulder height (as if holding the back of the opponent’s head)
  • 71. 2:00 Without stepping, Inward Elbow Strike with the left arm, while the right knifehand is again held at shoulder height.
  • 72. 2:02 Still moving in the RA direction, with the left leg perform two kicks: a low Roundhouse Kick with the ball of the foot, followed by a hooking roundhouse at head height. Land the left foot into Left Front Stance with the body facing RA.
  • 73. 2:03 Right inward punch, while the left knifehand is held at shoulder height (as if holding the back of the opponent’s head)
  • 74. 2:04 Without stepping, Inward Elbow Strike with the right arm, while the left knifehand is again held at shoulder height.

Moving in the GA-RA (northeast) direction (but facing the NA-DA direction while you do so):

  • 75. 2:05 Step the right foot back to face the NA-DA direction.
  • 76. 2:06 Right Front Kick in the NA-DA direction, then drop the right foot in front.
  • 77. 2:07 Slice back in the GA-RA direction (northeast) so that the right foot is still in front, Left Roundhouse Kick in the NA-DA direction, then drop the left foot in front and slice again to the GA-RA direction.
  • 78. 2:08 Right Jump Back Kick in the NA-DA direction, then drop the right foot in behind you (as one normally does with a back kick).
  • 79. 2:08 Continue to slice back again in the GA-NA direction (northeast) with the right leg in front, your still head turned in the NA-DA direction. Left Jump Back Kick in the NA-DA direction, then drop the left foot behind you (as one normally does with a back kick).

Down the Stem[]

Moving in the NA direction:

  • 80. 2:10 Now in a kind of Assisted Stance (that almost looks like a Tiger Stance?) with the left foot in front, facing the NA direction, High Cross Block (right arm on top of left arm).
  • 81. 2:11 Without stepping, Low Cross Block (right arm on top of left arm).
  • 82. 2:12 Step back with the left foot into a fighting stance (right leg forward) and slowly put the arms in a fighting position facing NA.
  • 83. 2:17 Jump Left-Right Double Front Kick, land with the right foot forward.
  • 84. 2:18 Left-Right Double Roundhouse Kick, land with the right foot forward, then begin to turn counter-clockwise.
  • 85. 2:19 Left Back Hook Kick in the NA direction, then bring the left foot back (as one normally does with a back hook kick) to land in a Left Back Stance (i.e., right foot forward) facing the NA direction.
  • 86. 2:20 Jump forward into a Right Jump Back Hook Kick in the NA direction, kihap, then bring the right foot back (as one normally does with a back hook kick) to land in a fighting stance now facing in the GA direction. End.
  • 87. 2:28 Return the right foot to the left foot to Closed Stance and return to Covered Fist Joonbee.
