Grandmaster Jimmy R. Jagtiani, Founder & Father of Taekwondo in India.
Grandmaster Jimmy R. Jagtiani was born and brought-up in Vietnam, received 2nd Dan Black Belt Certificate (Taekwondo) under “Oh Do Kwon” Taekwondo Academy in Vietnam in 1970, having B.A. degree in International School, Saigon Vietnam in 1972.
In March 1974, the final and most brutal phase of the Vietnam War had begun. The fall of Saigon appeared imminent. He has no alternative left but to pack up and return to his motherland, India and finally settled at Lucknow (UP) and aspired to practice Taekwondo, but here, people were unaware of Taekwondo. There was no training center in the city of Lucknow or elsewhere in India, so he practiced his own techniques and maintained himself.

On 2nd Aug. 1976 he formed the Taekwondo Federation of india "TFI" and established as a Na
'tional Body of Taekwondo in India. 'The 1st Anniversary of TFI was organised at K.D. Singh Babu Indoor Stadium on 2nd Aug. 1977. which was inaugurated by the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea, His Excellency Bum Suk Lee and Babu Banasi Das was the Chief Guest, Mr. K.D.Singh Babu was the Guest of Honour.
His Excellency Mr. Bum Suk Lee, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea, was so fascinated with our performance and awarded Ambassador’s Medal to Master Jimmy and further he promised maximum support in promotion of Taekwondo in India and also to send Master Jimmy to Korea for further advance training under Kukkiwon, the World Taekwondo Federation, (W.T.F.).
'Master Jimmy R. Jagtiani, reached Korea in 1978 for the special Training under Kukkiwon and WTF. 'In Korea, I received rigorous training under Grand Master Chang Seong Dong from July 1978 to Sept. 1979, who transformed me into a Taekwondo exponent; on Feb. 1979 I qualified 3rd Dan Black from Kukkiwon, Korea. I own immensely tribute to my Master Chang Seong Dong, who renders me the most competent guidance and co-operation all the way.
Under Master Jimmy leadership the Taekwondo Federation of India was formed in 1976 and got its recognized by the World Taekwondo Federation WTF in 1978, Asian Taekwondo Union ATU in 1982, Indian Olympic Association IOA in 1985, Government of India in 1988 and the Sport Authority of India SAI in 1996. He was elected Executive Member of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and Asian Taekwondo Union (ATU) in 1990 respectively.
