Palgwae forms are an older set of poomsae (forms) originally used by the Korean Taekwondo Association in the late 1960s. In the early 1970s these were replaced by the modern taegeuk forms that are still in use in Kukkiwon/ WTF-style taekwondo for all color belts (belts below black).

  • Begin from ready stance (junbi seogi).
  • 1. Moving the left foot step forward into Left Front Stance (wen apkubi) and execute a Low Opening Block (arae hecho makgi).
  • 2a. With the left foot fixed, execute a Right Front Kick (oreunbal apchagi).
  • 2b. Set the right foot down into Right Front Stance (oreun apkubi) and execute a middle-height Opening Block (momtong hecho makgi).
  • 3a. With the right foot fixed, execute a Left Front Kick (wenbal apchagi).
  • 3b. Set the left foot down into Left Front Stance (wen apkubi) and execute a High Cross Block (otkoreo olgul makgi).
  • 4a. With the left foot fixed, execute a Right Side Kick (oreunbal yopchagi).
  • 4b. Set the right foot down into Left Back Stance (i.e., right foot forward, wen dwitkubi) and execute a Double Knifehand Block (sonnal momtong makgi).
  • 5. Step way back with the left foot to turn 270 counterclockwise into Right Back Stance (i.e., left foot forward, oreun dwitkubi) and execute an Outward Block (momtong bakkat makgi).
  • 6. Slide the left foot forward into Left Front Stance (wen apkubi) and execute a Right High Punch (olgul baro jireugi).
  • 7. Without moving the feet, execute a Left High Block (i.e., upward block, olgul makgi).
  • 8a. With the left foot fixed, execute a Right Side Kick (oreunbal yopchagi).
  • 8b. Step down into Left Back Stance (i.e., right foot forward, wen dwitkubi) and execute a Double Knifehand Low Block (sonnal arrae makgi).
  • 9. Slide the right foot forward into Right Front Stance (oreun apkubi) and execute a Left Punch (momtong baro jireugi).
  • 10. Step right with the right foot to turn 180 clockwise into Left Back Stance (i.e., right foot forward, wen dwitkubi) and execute an Outward Block (momtong bakkat makgi).
  • 11. Slide the right foot forward into Right Front Stance (oreun apkubi) and execute a Left High Punch (olgul baro jireugi).
  • 12. Without moving the feet, execute a Right High Block (i.e., upward block, olgul makgi).
  • 13a. With the right foot fixed, execute a Left Side Kick (wenbal yopchagi).
  • 13b. Step down into Right Back Stance (i.e., left foot forward, oreun dwitkubi) and execute a Double Knifehand Low Block (sonnal arrae makgi).
  • 14. Slide the left foot forward into Left Front Stance (wen apkubi) and execute a Right Punch (momtong baro jireugi).
  • 15. Moving the left foot, turn 90° counterclockwise into Left Front Stance (wen apkubi) and execute a Low Cross Block (otkoreo arae makgi).
  • 16. Without moving the feet, execute a High Cross Block (otkoreo olugl makgi).
  • 17. Without moving the feet, grab, twist and pull the blocking hands then execute a High Punch (olgul baro jireugi).
  • 18. Pivot 180° clockwise and slide forward into Horse-riding Stance (juchumseogi), executing a Right Low Side Block (arae yop makgi).
  • 19. Pivot 180° counterclockwise and slide the left foot forward into Left Front Stance (wen apkubi), executing an outward knifehand strike (sonnal bakkat chigii).
  • 20a. Pivoting on the left foot, execute a Right Target Kick (oreun pyojeokchagi).
  • 20b. Set the right foot down into Horse-riding Stance (juchumseogi) and execute a Right Elbow Target Strike (oreun palkup pyojeok chigii).
  • 21. Slide back a half step in Horse-riding Stance and execute a Single Mountain Block (waesanteul makgi).
  • 22. Shift the body weight to the rear into Right Back Stance (i.e., left foot forward, oreun dwitkubi) and execute a Double Knifehand Block (sonnal momtong makgi).
  • 23. Slide the left foot forward into Left Front Stance (wen apkubi) and execute a Right Punch (momtong baro jireugi). Kihap.
  • Moving the left foot, return to ready stance by stepping forward.
