Palgwae forms are an older set of poomsae (forms) originally used by the Korean Taekwondo Association in the late 1960s. In the early 1970s these were replaced by the modern taegeuk forms that are still in use in Kukkiwon/WT-style taekwondo for all color belts (belts below black).

  • Begin from ready stance (junbi seogi).
  • 1. Move the left foot to turn 90 left into Right Back Stance (i.e., left foot forward, oreun dwitkubi) and execute a Double Knifehand Block (sonnal momtong makgi).
  • 2a. With the left foot fixed, execute a Right Front Kick (oreunbal apchagi).
  • 2b. Set the right foot down into Right Front Stance (oreun apkubi) and execute a Right Punch (momtong bandae jireugi).
  • 3. Step right with the right foot to turn 180 clockwise into Left Back Stance (i.e., right foot forward, wen dwitkubi) and execute a Double Knifehand Block (sonnal momtong makgi).
  • 4a. With the right foot fixed, execute a Left Front Kick (wenbal apchagi).
  • 4b. Set the left foot down into Left Front Stance (wen apkubi) and execute a Left Punch (momtong bandae jireugi).
  • 5. Moving the left foot, turn 90 into Left Front Stance (wen apkubi) and execute a Left Low Block (arrae makgi).
  • 6. With feet fixed, execute a Swallowform Knifehand Strike (jebipoom mok chigii).
  • 7a. With the left foot fixed, execute a Right Front Kick (oreunbal apchagi).
  • 7b. Without setting the right foot down, jump forward into rear cross stance (dwi koaseogi) and execute a Right Augmented High Backfist Strike (kodureo deungjumeok olgul chigii). Kihap.
  • 8. Step way back with the left foot to turn 270 counterclockwise into Right Back Stance (i.e., left foot forward, oreun dwitkubi) and execute a Double Knifehand Low Block (sonnal arrae makgi).
  • 9. Slide the left foot forward into Left Front Stance (wen apkubi) and execute an Opening Block (momtong hecho makgi).
  • 10a. With the right foot fixed, execute a Right Front Kick (oreunbal apchagi).
  • 10b-c. Set the right foot down into Right Front Stance (oreun apkubi) and execute a Double Punch (dubeon jireugi), punching first with the right hand and then with the left hand.
  • 11. Step right with the right foot to turn 180 clockwise into Left Back Stance (i.e., right foot forward, wen dwitkubi) and execute a Double Knifehand Low Block (sonnal arrae makgi).
  • 12. Slide the right foot forward into Right Front Stance (oreun apkubi) and execute an Opening Block (momtong hecho makgi).
  • 13a. With the right foot fixed, execute a Left Front Kick (wenbal apchagi).
  • 13b-c. Set the left foot down into Left Front Stance (wen apkubi) and execute a Double Punch (dubeon jireugi), punching first with the left hand and then with the right hand.
  • 14. Moving the left foot, turn 90° counterclockwise into Right Back Stance (i.e., left foot forward, oreun dwitkubi) and execute a Double Knifehand Block (sonnal momtong makgi).
  • 15. Slide the left foot forward into Left Front Stance (wen abkubi) and execute a Swallowform Palm Strike to the chin (jebipoom teok chigii).
  • 16a. Without moving the left foot, execute a Right Front Kick (oreunbal apchagi).
  • 16b. Step down into Right Front Stance (oreun apkubi) and execute a Right High Backfist Strike (deungjumeok olgul chigii). Kihap.
  • 17a. Without moving the right foot, execute a Left Front Kick (wenbal apchagi).
  • 17b. Step down into Left Front Stance (wen apkubi) and execute a Right High Block (i.e., upward block, olgul makgi).
  • 18a. Pivoting on the left foot, execute a Right Side Kick (yopchagi).
  • 18b. Step down into Left Back Stance (i.e., right foot forward, wen dwitkubi) and execute a Double Knifehand Block (sonnal momtong makgi).
  • 19. Pivot 180 counterclockwise into Right Back Stance (i.e., left foot forward, oreun dwitkubi) and execute a Double Knifehand Block (sonnal momtong makgi).
  • Moving the right foot, return to ready stance.
